Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Tomlin still undefeated

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jeff Samardzija went eight innings to win his third straight start - a career first - and the San Francisco Giants rallied for two runs in the eighth inning against the Reds' historically bad bullpen for a 3-1 victory Tuesday night.

Cincinnati's bullpen gave up at least one run for the 21st consecutive game, surpassing the 2013 Colorado Rockies for the major league record, according to information provided by the Reds from the Elias Sports Bureau.

With the game tied 1-1, Kelby Tomlinson drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single off Caleb Cotham (0-1). Gregor Blanco followed with another run-scoring single, putting the Giants in position for their fifth straight win at Great American Ball Park.

Samardzija (4-1) had been 0-5 in his last nine starts against the Reds, but limited them to three hits - including Adam Duvall's homer - to end the slump.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Reds bullpen has set a major league record by giving up a run for the 21st consecutive game.

Kelby Tomlinson's RBI infield single off Caleb Cotham put the Giants up 2-1 in the eighth inning on Tuesday night, the 21st straight game in which the Reds' bullpen allowed at least one run. The Reds had been tied with the 2013 Colorado Rockies for the major league record since 1900.

The Reds' bullpen is by far the worst in the majors. It came into the game with a 6.54 ERA, allowing 69 runs in 95 innings with 54 walks - all the most in the majors. Reds relievers have allowed 22 homers in 27 games, also the most in the majors.

NEW YORK (AP) - National champion Villanova will visit Purdue on Nov. 14 in the opening game of the second annual Gavitt Tipoff Games.

The event will have eight games between members of the Big East and Big Ten to be played Nov. 14-18, the conferences announced Tuesday. The series is named for Big East founder Dave Gavitt.

There is one rematch from last year, as Maryland plays at Georgetown. Also on Nov. 15, Wisconsin is at Creighton. Northwestern is at Butler in the lone game on Nov. 16.

On Nov. 17, Seton Hall is at Iowa, Providence visits Ohio State and Rutgers is at DePaul.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games conclude with St. John's at Minnesota on Nov. 18.

Game times and television assignments will be announced at a later date.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Browns released linebacker Scott Solomon, whose 2015 season was stopped short by injuries.

Cleveland had high hopes for Solomon as an outside pass rusher, but he hurt an ankle in the first quarter of the season opener against the New York Jets and was inactive for the next three games. On Oct. 11, he injured a knee on the first play against Baltimore, returned to play but was placed on injured reserve three days later.

Solomon became expendable after the Browns selected two linebackers during last weekend's NFL draft. Solomon has also played for Tampa Bay, the Jets and Tennessee.

The Browns also waived wide receiver Saalim Hakim, who was signed last week after impressing coaches during a tryout in mini-camp.

Cleveland added four wide receivers during the draft, selecting Baylor's Corey Coleman with the No. 15 overall pick.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A pair of early goals and a great performance by Matt Murray have the Pittsburgh Penguins up two games to one in their Stanley Cup second-round series against Washington.

Patric Hornqvist and Tom Kuhnhackl scored a minute apart to give the Pens a 2-0 lead about 7 1/2 minutes into a 3-2 triumph against the Capitals. Carl Hagelin (HAG'-lihn) added a second-period goal that put the Penguins ahead 3-0 before they put the game in the hands of their goaltender.

Murray made 19 of his 47 saves in the third period to help Pittsburgh stay ahead. Alex Ovechkin (oh-VEHCH'-kihn) ended Murray's shutout bid 8:02 into the final period, and Justin Williams made it a one-goal game with 56 seconds before Murray preserved the victory.

Game 4 is Wednesday in Pittsburgh, but the Pens could be without their top defenseman. Kris Letang (leh-TANG') leveled Marcus Johansson with a hit that likely will be reviewed by the NHL.
