Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Indians win sixth game in a row vs. Detroit

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer during his latest big game against Milwaukee, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Brewers 9-5 Thursday night even though their bullpen extended its historically bad streak of allowing runs.

Alfredo Simon (1-3) made it easy on the major leagues' worst bullpen, becoming only the second Reds starter to last seven innings. He allowed three runs in 7 2/3 innings, including Alex Presley's two-run homer. The Reds turned three double plays behind him.

The bullpen couldn't close it out smoothly. J.J. Hoover gave up Chris Carter's 10th homer leading off the ninth inning, extending the bullpen's major league record to 23 consecutive games allowing at least one run.

Bruce homered during a five-run first inning off Chase Anderson (1-4). His 34 career homers against the Brewers are by far his highest total against any team.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez will have surgery on his fractured right thumb on Friday.

Perez was injured while tagging a runner at the plate Saturday against Philadelphia. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day when X-rays revealed the fracture.

Dr. Thomas Graham will perform the surgery, after which a timetable on how long Perez is excepted to be out will be announced.

Perez is hitless in eight at-bats and has drawn six walks in four games. He batted .228 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in 70 games last season.

Cleveland acquired Chris Gimenez from Texas for cash considerations on Wednesday to back up Yan Gomes behind the plate.

CHICAGO (AP) - Commissioner Rob Manfred says a decision is imminent on whether games between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins will be played in Puerto Rico this month.

Manfred said Thursday the announcement on whether a two-game series will be moved because of concerns about the Zika virus will be made Friday or Monday "at the latest."

The teams are scheduled to play May 30-31 in San Juan to celebrate Roberto Clemente Day, a league-wide tribute honoring the late Pirates Hall of Famer and Puerto Rico native. But with players on both sides expressing concern, the games might be moved to Miami.

Manfred also says he expects a decision soon on suspended Colorado shortstop Jose Reyes, echoing comments he made a month ago.

DALLAS (AP) - A Dallas judge has ordered former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel to have no contact with the alleged victim in his domestic violence case.

Manziel was in court less than 15 minutes Thursday as Judge Roberto Canas set conditions for his release on $1,500 bond. Manziel cannot contact ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley, nor can he be in possession of any firearms.

The Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A and M was indicted last month after Crowley said he hit her and threatened to kill her in January.

No plea was entered, but defense attorney Robert Hinton says Manziel plans to plead not guilty.

The 23-year-old Manziel faces a misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. A status hearing was set for June 24th.

UNDATED (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates had a chance this week to move into a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead. Instead, the Cubs have left the Steel City with a six-game lead after completing a three-game sweep of the Bucs.

Jon Lester worked in and out of trouble while tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Chicago's 6-2 win over the Pirates. Lester surrendered eight hits and two walks but lowered his ERA to 1.58. The lefty has allowed fewer than two runs in five of six starts this season.

Ben Zobrist (ZOH'-brihst) opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the third inning of the Cubs' seventh victory in eight games. Anthony Rizzo was 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored as the Cubs improved to a major league-best 20-6.
