CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- This month's permitting activity shows that oil and gas exploration companies continue to show interest in our listening area.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, more than 50 percent of horizontal drilling permits issued since the beginning of June are for counties in southeastern Ohio. Two were issued in Guernsey County, three each in Noble and Harrison counties, and five in Belmont County.
The ODNR also issued 11 new permits in Carrol County, and one in Trumbull County.
The continued permitting activity coincides with the opening of MarkWest Energy's cryogenic gas processing facility at the Cadiz-Harrison County Industrial Park, the first of its kind in Ohio.
The ODNR's Department of Mineral Resources says that 731 permits have been issued in the Utica Shale, 358 of which have been or are being drilled. The report also states that 102 wells are currently in production.
